Architecture that begins
with people and is in place.

With In Architecture · formerly Architects’ Studio, est. 1999

We design with the people who will inhabit a building, and in the place where it belongs. Neither exists without the other.

Across nearly four decades of practice, that's meant schools built around courtyards instead of corridors, a farmhouse planned around a tree a client grew with her own hands, and campuses where the structure itself becomes the backdrop for the life unfolding inside it. The work spans institutions, hospitality and residences, at every scale from one room to an entire campus - held together by a single habit of mind: design with feeling, deliver with rigour.

Glimpses
Work

Projects, by the ideas that drove them

A working sample of the practice's range: schools, city homes, country and hill homes, hospitality, interiors and more. Each is organised around one idea specific to its site and its client, rather than a style applied from project to project. Consistent in design thinking, versatile in expression.

Thinking

What has consistently driven the work

Not a style, but a set of habits we return to on every project, regardless of scale or budget.

01
Experience

Spaces unfold as you move through them

A building is experienced as a sequence of spaces, not as a single static image. At DPS Chhatarpur, near Khajuraho, open corridors lead to courtyards, which open onto others. Along the way, glimpses of distant steps invite the eye forward. Varying scales, materials and natural light give each part of the journey a different character. The architecture intentionally reveals itself gradually, creating a sense of discovery and surprise.

02
People + place

People and place shape the architecture

A building is more than its tangible requirements and amenities. It is also a place for people to meet, interact and build a sense of community. At KC High School in Chennai, the plan centres on a circular amphitheatre where students and faculty gather. Partly shaded by the surrounding buildings and open to cross breezes from the sides, it becomes a comfortable, informal place for shared experiences. The space is shaped by the life it accommodates.

03
Scale

The thinking remains, whatever the scale.

From modest residences and small schools to large institutional campuses, the scale may change. The attention to people, place and experience does not. A charitable village school of six classrooms in the Himalayan foothills receives the same care in the design of its spaces as a campus spread across 50 acres.

04
Material + climate

Nothing without reason

Every element has to earn its place. Exposed brick can serve as structure, finish and thermal mass; jaali screens can filter daylight while allowing air to move through. Where conditions allow, we prioritise daylight and cross-ventilation before relying on mechanical systems.

Our preference for local materials and building techniques goes back to our early years working with Building Centre, a HUDCO sister concern. The principle remains the same: choose materials for their relevance, and make each element do more than one job. Sustainability often begins with restraint.

Structure

Structure as expression

At Neetee Clothing in Gurgaon, structure is an integral part of the architecture. Mushroom-shaped columns support flat slabs, leaving the floor plates clear and services easier to route. The reinforced concrete is left exposed, retaining the character of the formwork. When a structural idea is well resolved, it can give a building as much character as any applied finish.

Delivery

Design with feeling, deliver with rigour

An idea worth having is also worth building properly. At KC High School in Chennai, an elliptical skylight and curved balconies bring daylight into the heart of the school. Their success depends on more than the initial idea: on the proportions, the slender railings, the junctions between slab and glass, and the resolution of every edge. Design intent must survive the demands of a real site, a real budget and a real client. That is where experience and rigour matter.

Practice

1989 to today

With In Architecture carries forward close to four decades of practice, under a name that says plainly what the work has always tried to do.

1989

Graduates from SPA, New Delhi

Amardeep completes his Bachelor of Architecture at the School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi - after formative years working with Building Centre, a sister concern of HUDCO, on projects demanding innovations in building technology and materials.

1989–99

Practice begins - Partner, ADM Architects & Line & Form

A decade in partnership practice, building the range and instincts that would later anchor an independent studio.

1999

Architects' Studio founded

Amardeep establishes his own practice from Gurugram, as Proprietor and Principal Architect, taking on institutional, hospitality and residential work across scales.

2026

With In Architecture

The practice becomes With In Architecture - an evolution of Architects' Studio, not a departure from it, carrying the same body of work forward under a name built around how it designs: with people, in place.

Amardeep Singh

Principal Architect

Amardeep has been practising architecture since 1989. His work reflects a long-standing interest in local materials, building technologies and environmental response, alongside a fascination with spaces that engage and surprise.

Across projects ranging from private residences to educational campuses and hospitality, he seeks an architecture that belongs to its physical and socio-cultural context. His work has been recognised for its quiet, unobtrusive character, where the experience of space takes precedence over the making of a façade.

A graduate of the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, Amardeep has served as a Visiting Professor at SPA and continues to enjoy teaching, speaking and exchanging ideas about architecture. He is registered with the Council of Architecture and is associated with the Indian Institute of Architects and the Indian Institute of Interior Designers.

He lives and works in Gurugram.
